A Cinco de Mayo Rhythm Celebration-03

It was a privilege to share the power of music for a “Cinco de Mayo” rhythm celebration with the wonderful residents at staff at Summit Square Retirement Community in Wayneboro, VA.

A Cinco de Mayo Rhythm Celebration-02

Our day began with a Music For Wellness session for over 20 independent living residents .. we began with a wellness exercise, then shook Interactive Rhythm Shakers to a lively “Cinco de Mayo” song. Sound shape drums were introduced and we tapped the rhythm of our name and favorite Mexican food or beverage. Responses included: taco’s, enchiladas, margaritas, sangria and guacamole, When the drew an “Cinco de Mayo” image on the sound shape drums. Drawings included: chili peppers, sombrero’s, dresses, maracas, and taking a siesta. We closed with a deep breathing exercise. Reflective responses included: “calm, relaxed, peaceful, content, great, wonderful, and awesome, etc.

The staff in-service training began by facilitating the Summit Square Retirement Community staff to play the Suzuki Tone chimes to several hymns… great interactive activity right after lunch! I also shared techniques and rhythm ativities to energize and engage the residents.

Then a festive and highly energized “Cinco de Mayo” Music Wellness session was conducted for over 30 assisted living and health care residents. Our opening shaker activity included maracas, vegetable shakers (green peppers and lemons), rain sticks, and ocean drums to a modified “La Bamba” song. Then interactive rhythm shakers were introduced as we tapped the rhythm and sang: “Cindo de Mayo, that’s on the 5th of May.” Next we learned a few Spanish words and translated English the song: “Mi Cuerpo” to “My Body” ,,, residents inserted the appropriate word and pointed to the corresponding part of the body. Then scarves and ribbon streamers were distributed and invited the residents to move to the song “De Colores.” We closed this egaging and empowering session by singing a few hymns and “Happy Trails”

Thank you Jenny Lucas for inviting me to spend a fabulous day with your staff and residents. I’m not sure who was having more fun, the staff, the residents or me!! I’m truly grateful and blessed to share the power of music to enrich your community. #‎luvservingwithmusic
