The Power of Rhythm with the Hampton Roads Holistic Nurses Network-HRHNN

Sentara Princess Anne Hospital-1

It was an honor to facilitate the power of Rhythm with the Hampton Roads Holistic Nurses Network-HRHNN to Discover and Connect their Personal Rhythm for self-care. The holistic nurses and health care professionals learned how music can be used to promote health and wellness and decrease compassion fatigue by experiencing HealthRHYTHMs group empowerment drumming protocol.

This evidenced based research protocol was conducted by Dr. Barry Bittman, MD and his team demonstrated 45-60 minutes of drumming increased the NK cells in our blood which boosted our immune system, decreased stress and anxiety.

The protocol included a wellness exercise, lemon shaker take and pass activity, stating our name and one descriptive word on the drum and group drumming. During the inspirational beat, we discussed the ways to recognize and prevent compassion fatigue. Several comments included: “deep breathing, getting grounded by removing shoes, sit quietly by myself, sleep.”

We closed this beautiful session by setting an intention, connecting to our heart beat, and playing to our own person rhythm as the group become one in sync and unison.

Reflective comments at the completion the session included: “Energized, awesome, Relaxing, Great, intrigued, fascinated, so moved, and Peace.”

Thank you Diane Shiver for inviting me to share the power of Group Empowerment Drumming during the Hampton Roads Holistic Nurses Meeting and Leeana Caplan a Music Therapy student shadow for assisting me with the logistics. ‪#‎luvservingwithmusic‬ Hampton Roads Holistic Nurses Network-HRHNN Music For Wellness
