Highlights from the National Center for Creative Aging Conference, Washington, DC

1

A quick overview of the NCCA which was held in Washington, DC on 19-20 May 2015.  There were over 400 leaders of the world to connect, collaborate and share the power of the creative arts as a health and wellness tool.  This 2nd annual conference explored the Practice, the Research, and the Business of Creative Aging in America.

This conference comprised of three signature convening’s–the 2015 Leadership Exchange, the NCCA Professional Development Institute, and a robust constellation of Community, National Advocacy, and Field Networking events.  I was not able to attend the Leadership Exchange presentation.  The Leadership Exchange included practice plenary sessions and sessions that broke into small groups including (foundations, life long learning, health/wellness, place making, and innovation lab).  I attended the break out sessions on the health and wellness track which emphasized the person center care model.

I also attended the Congressional briefing at Capitol Hill that discussed the role the arts play in the lives of older Americans that gave a summary of the Summit meeting that was held the day before.

I met some amazing and passionate creative artists who openly shared how they used their art form (visual art, dance, poetry, clay, paint, and music) as a life enrichment tool for their organizations to enjoy as they age.  If you have specific questions, I’d be glad to talk to you “off line” but bottom line, Glad I attended and met some prominent leaders in the arts profession (including NEA, Am for the Arts, and AARP).
