Summertime, Summertime, FUN FUN Summertime was this week’s theme during the Senior Champions Program at New Zion Baptist Church in Williamsburg. This program is an Adult Day Care Pilot program managed by the Colonial Heritage Community Foundation.

The session began by shaking Seashell Castanets to the tune “I’ve Got the Castanet Blues” … we grooved and moved to this catchy lively tune. Then we revised the lyrics, sang and “Welcomed Back” everyone to the Tune “My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean.”

Then each senior was invited to share various “sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and feelings” of summer…. answers included “fireflies, bugs, BBQs, Firecrackers, fruits, salads, ocean, beach, suntan lotion and sunburns.” We took their answers and wrote a new song “In the Summer, the Hot Hot Summer” to the tune: “When Lion Sleeps Tonight.”

The colorful parachute was introduced and the seniors raised, lowered, created ocean waves, etc to several “Beach Boys” tunes, “Summertime Blues” and “Summer Flower.” This was a range of motion exercise and team building activity for the seniors!

Various Sound Shape drums were introduced as each senior tapped in rhythm while they sang. Then each senior was invited to draw something they liked to do for FUN in the summer. Responses included “going to the beach, BBQs, eating ice cream, relaxing and softball.”

Lastly the seniors played several songs on the Suzuki Tone chimes including: “In the Good Old Summertime” and “Daisy, Daisy” We closed with a wellness exercise to the instrumental song “Summer Child.” Reflective comments from the seniors included: “soothing, relaxing, fabulous, fun, summery, festive, creative, enlightening, calming, great.” ‪#‎luvservingwithmusic
