Flying Butterflies and Beautiful Flowers excited and stimulated senior champions during an energizing, engaging and empowering Music Therapy themed session today, We were also joined with the children of the Family Focus preschool for an Intergenerational Music Therapy program.
Our intergenerational session included partnering/connecting the older adult and younger child by shaking and tapping apples. Then a special caterpillar puppet that converts into a butterfly was introduced during discussion of the 4 stages of Butterfly development: stage 1 – Egg, stage 2 – Caterpillar, stage 3 – cocoon, stage 4 – butterfly.
Then the butterfly flew high in the air during an interactive parachute activity reinforcing gross motor movement, teamwork, and lots of laughter! We then sang our special good bye song and the children returned to their classroom. What energy, excitement, and creativity this program has facilitated in building bridges to connect these two generations.
After the children left, the senior champions smelled and discussed the beautiful flowers and then completed the song called “Beautiful Flowers” to the tune: “My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean.” Then the lyrics from the song “Butterfly” by Andy Williams was reviewed … the senior champions noted that “Butterfly” was the name of a girl.
We closed with a the song “In the Garden” on the tone chimes and discussed how butterflies love to fly around flowers and gardens. We closed to a relaxing deep breathing activity to “Butterfly” by Chris Pickering on Piano. Reflective comments included: Wonderful, Great, Totally Awesome, Fluttery, Beautiful, Lovely, Marvelous” #luvservingwithmusic
