Overview of “Alive Inside” Documentary, Wednesday, October 22, 7:15 pm, Naro Cinema, Norfolk, VA
The documentary follows social worker Dan Cohen, founder of the nonprofit organization Music & Memory, as he fights against a broken health-care system to demonstrate music’s ability to combat memory loss and restore a deep sense of self to those suffering from it. Rossato-Bennett visits family members who have witnessed the miraculous effects of personalized music on their loved ones, and offers illuminating interviews with experts including renowned neurologist and best-selling author Oliver Sacks (Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the Brain) and musician Bobby McFerrin (“Don’t Worry, Be Happy”).
A dynamic and interactive panel discussion followed the film about arts in dementia care. Panelist included the following Health Care leaders in the Hampton Roads: Dr. Bruce Robertson, Sentara Life Care Corporation, Dr. Robert Bryant, Senior Vice President at Riverside Health System, and Dr. Paul Aravich, Eastern Virginia Medical School.
Thanks to Tidewater Arts Outreach, thanks for bringing a community of Health Care professionals, students, caregivers, seniors and artists passionate about using the arts to assist older adults in the community. Music is so powerful and does make a with older adults with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
