Lovely Luscious Lavender smells and sounds engaged, energized and empowered the Senior Champions Program at New Zion Baptist Church and Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Williamsburg. This program is an Adult Day Care Pilot program managed by the Colonial Heritage Community Foundation. We had several new seniors join both sessions … they fit right in and quickly became part of the group!
After our opening wellness exercise, we discussed the Herb “Lavender” that followed the T…herapeutic Gardeners’ session. We sang the song “Lavender Blue” song with colorful tone bars and incorporated the individual’s name and the color tone they were playing as an ice breaker activity. We reviewed the characteristics, uses, locations “Lavender” is grown.
We then drummed the rhythm from the Lavender Blue song on the drum, emphasizing “dilly, dilly” as a drum roll! Then we discussed and imaged the sounds, smells and sights of a Lavender field in the rain and played that as an non-facilitated imagery drum experience using the Aroma Drum, wooden frog clasps, cricket and ocean drum. The mood and experience was so CALM and TRANQUIL, several individuals closed their eyes and nodded their heads! Lastly, we played “Edelweiss” on the tone chimes.
Reflective comments from the groups included: “uplifting, luminous, beautiful, wonderful, super, loved it, outstanding, creative, great, lovely, and fabulous”
