A Dementia Support Group Meeting at St. Timothy Lutheran Church, Norfolk, VA

0

Thank you Ellen Greene for allowing me to facilitate a dementia support group meeting at St. Timothy Lutheran Church, Norfolk, VA for care partners living with dementia.

We discussed “Celebrating the Holidays” from Teepa Snow’s Positive Approach to Care philosophy using a “mug, a glass of clear water and a glass of mucky water” as a visual props.

We discussed what “is in our mugs” and what choices we make to celebrate the holidays with our loved one experiencing brain change.

As stated by Teepa, we should strive to be a Sapphire … we need to be FLEXIBLE, live in the MOMENT, let the JOY shine through and recognize when we need a break and get some time for us!

We discussed and shared ways we could create moments of JOY with our loved one … responses included: dancing to Motown Music, Prayer, Poetry and going to our Church or Temple of worship.

In closing, we discussed the importance of taking the time to THINK, there is still something of VALUE in my mug and we’ll make it with what we have right now, and we’ll take a break and ask for help if we need itl Happy Holidays everyone!
